Our Learn-to-Skate USA Program in the News

General Information

Learn to SkateThe Learn to Skate USA program offers group classes for students age 4 and older, including adults of all ages. Classes include a half an hour of instruction and a half an hour of ice time to practice skills learned in class. Classes typically range from 5 to 8 students.

The Learn to Skate USA program offers:

  • 8 levels with approximately 5 skills per level
  • Classes organized by age and ability (student placement will occur during the first class)
  • Instruction of beginning levels/basic techniques, including backward skating, crossovers, edges, turns, and beginning spins and jumps

Fees

Fees cover the cost of ice time, instruction, insurance, materials, and free rink skate rentals (as available). The cost of one session (one lesson per week for 6 weeks) is $90/skater. Be sure to pre-register, because the walk-on fee is $95/skater. If you cannot attend all six weeks of a session, we allow for one make-up lesson per skater per session for no additional charge.

A parent may skate during the student's practice half hour at a rate of $30/session per parent. Rink skates are available at no additional cost, as supplies last.

Sponsorships: A memorial sponsorship program is available for up to five children, who, for financial reasons, may not be able to otherwise participate in the Learn to Skate USA program. Contact us for more information.

Cancellation policy: No refunds will be granted after the second week of each session. $25 portion is not refundable.

Rising Stars Program

Rising Stars is an additional program that offers small group classes for LTS skaters in levels 4-8 during club ice. The program is an excellent opportunity for committed skaters to advance further. The program acts as a bridge between LTS and the club. Skaters may participate in Rising Stars and LTS at the same time, if desired. If you are interested, speak with your LTS instructor. Things to keep in mind...

1. Arrive a half an hour early to your first lesson.

This will give you time to get checked in, to find your class and instructor assignment, and to try on different skates. For all following lessons, be sure to arrive with enough time to get ready to hit the ice your class starts.

2. LTS includes free skate rental, or you may choose to purchase your own.

Figure and hockey skates are available at the rink for rental as long as supplies last. Skaters are encouraged to provide their own skates - make sure they provide ample ankle support. (New skates will need to be sharpened before the first lesson.) If you have questions on purchasing new or used skates, please contact the club. Although the club does not sell skates, we can help you find the skates that will work best for you. We recommend a professional skate shop, such as Ice Hot Concepts (Skaneateles), rather than a general sports store.

3. Dress appropriately.

Clothing should allow for freedom of movement. It is recommended to dress in layers, as skaters may warm up as they begin to exercise. Helmets and padding are strongly encouraged, especially for child skaters. Gloves/mittens must be worn for hand protection. Gloves may be purchased at the registration table. Wear thin socks for best fit in your skates - heavy socks can cause rubbing and a loose skate fit around the ankles.

Rules:

  • The practice half hour is for practicing techniques learned in lessons and for parent skate. Horseplay will not be tolerated, as we value the safety of our skaters above all else. Offenders will receive one warning. Failure to comply can result in removal from the program without refund.
  • No food, beverages, or chewing gum on the ice.
